Coupling

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, “I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.”

Eleanor Roosevelt

It was a bittersweet farewell to two people who had become more than subjects of a book. They had accepted me as a friend over the years I had conducted the interviews. I had sat and enjoyed dinner with their family and felt part of something very special. They were people who understood what I had dealt with alone for a decade. However, with the interview over I could commit the transcript to book form and no longer have to dread any new revelations of their time there at least for a while.

They had been generous with their time and asked for nothing in return but to have an open mind listen to and record their account. Dai and Anne would get back to their lives, to their family, while I sat alone with piles of notes and recordings trying to make sense of not only their experience but mine also.

Whereas you may be relieved to know their experience from 1989 to 1991 had ended, the house was still very much alive, brooding, growing, waiting for new occupants to feast upon.

Before I present to you – and encourage you to study – possible explanations on what may be behind these events, we must first understand my own experience at the house. For those not familiar with A most haunted house, I present it now in its original format. For those that have already delved into the account, you now can relive the experience with new information, new insights, and I am also confident you will look upon it with new eyes, develop new theories and conclusions on what you believe is happening there.

I am not going to change the original documentation as I have established it was my testimonial and why I hid behind a veil of anonymity to protect vulnerable aspects of my life which I felt were open to attack. I hope you appreciate my reasons for that.

I have written A most haunted house as two personalities. One as the investigator trying to make sense of it all a decade later, an investigator trying to distance himself from his vulnerability, to attempt to gain control of his life and the events that occurred there. The second personality, John, was my attempt to reach catharsis, the baring of my soul, warts and all, of my experience to help understand what I had been through. The details from the other people are as accurate as possible given it is based on conversations that took place in 2003 and in early 2004, as well as a few participants allowing me to record their retrospective commentaries in 2012. The events documented and presented occurred over three months in 2003.

A most haunted house is a very different account from that of Dai and Anne.
